Off-diet update - March 27th, 2011

Well, things are going alright so far. Weight has fluctuated a bit up and down but is maintaining right around the same spot as the weigh in, which is good. I have eaten one or two not so healthy meals but for the most part I am sticking with good stuff... some left over soup for example.

Again the end of the month approaches and I find myself strapped for diet menu cash... This has not been a good month for the diet. However, despite this I have still managed to lose weight. This is a good sign. I hope the trend continues, and as my uncle pointed out in a comment on the last weigh in, if this rate continues as is, I should hope to be down to my target weight by January. (previous inaccurate statement removed)

Thanks for reading everyone, even on these days when I'm not writing as much because of my busy schedule. Hopefully I can get some data plan back on my cell phone soon and can update from my phone instead of being a slave to the computer.

Be good humans!

March 22nd, 2011 - Official Weigh-in

Previous weight: 386.2
Current weight: 378.5

+/-: -7.7 lbs

Not a bad week! Portions were small and despite one small slip on a cold day with free hot food offered, things went pretty well. This is a good step!

Since I have some leftover soup I'll be able to start again in a couple days and not feel the sting as much wallet-wise; and as the weather improves (hopefully) I'll be able to get out on my bike and really get that weight to drop!

Day Seven - March 21st, 2011

LAST DAY!!!

I was pretty bad today, but for good reason.

I made all my food up last night in advance for my day today. But unfortunately I discovered today that the soup is awful cold and that the rice is pretty hard to eat when it's cold as well, and the teriyaki not as flavorful when cold, and it basically made the whole batch of rice and broccoli stick together in one hard-to-break clump. At least I had the snow peas and celery sticks.

I had some water, and some pineapple juice, and then some black coffee to stay warm (first a venti cup from Starbucks, which was awful, and then some free coffee from Stumptown provided by the Timbers for those in line). But then they also handed out slices of Papa Murphy's, and after smelling the slices of Hot Lips pizza all day and being fairly hungry I took a small slice of plain cheese when they came by... I regretted it about five seconds after I finished it, but it was warm and I was cold.

After getting home I warmed up the rice, added some sweet chili sauce, and I've eaten about half of it, and still have soup to eat. But it was a good day overall, and the weigh-in is first thing tomorrow morning. It's a good thing my weight is back down again, but we'll find out just how far tomorrow!

Cheers!

Day Six - March 20th, 2011

Today diet-wise was a great day. However, I forgot to add something to yesterday's post so I'll just put it here.

I had just finished my steak dinner and was waiting for the boss to finish his paperwork so I could go home. I meandered over to the soon-to-be-removed ice cream bin and grabbed one of the ice cream sandwiches that they had in there, the kind with two cookies on the outside. I was just about to open it when I stopped, looked at it, and remembered that I couldn't have it. So I put it back. And there you have it... a near slip, and some good strong will-power by yours truly.

Well, back to today. I woke up at about 8 to put the last ingredient of my first meal together, and then went back to bed. When I finally woke again, it was time; I went out into the kitchen, turned off the power to the slow cooker, got a plate, and served myself some corned beef and cabbage.
It was well worth the wait. I know what some of you are saying: "But David, you can't have potatoes on this day in your diet!" Uh, do you see any potatoes? NO! I had corned beef, and cabbage, and that was all. The only change I would make for the next time I do this particular meal is to use fresh corned beef, not canned.

A little while later, as I started to feel hungry again, I popped out some oysters and made some pan-fried oysters using very little oil to grease the skillet. They were delicious! Note to self: Get small oysters next time; Medium is just too big.

For dinner, at work, I baked up a chicken breast and two drumsticks, and steamed some broccoli and cauliflower. The chicken was amazing; no added flavor, and the meat just pulled right off the bone. The veggies I topped with a smidge of garlic butter and some salt. Some of the melted garlic butter got onto some of the chicken, which added a bit of nice flavor. Sorry y'all, no pictures of the chicken unfortunately.

When I got home, I heated up a bowl of soup and used some Red Robin seasoning for flavoring. It was ok... Def. need better flavor options.

Tomorrow is the last day of the diet week. Made up food tonight since I'll be out and about almost all day tomorrow. Make sure to tune back in tomorrow and see what happens!

Cheers!

Day Five - March 19th, 2011

Well, today will be remembered for some special events, but not relating to my diet, save one. For kicks I weighed myself this afternoon and the scale tipped at 379. Progress!

I really didn't eat hardly anything today; I just wasn't hungry. I had my 12-oz petite sirloin and a big can of whole stewed tomatoes, along with a glass of ice water (seen below), and then a bowl of soup when I got home. Well, ok, I'm still working on it as I type.

In a short bit I'll be preparing some food for tomorrow, and have the next couple meals planned out already! Lots of soup to be eaten in the next two days though. That's alright, it won't be a problem!

Thanks, and I hope you are enjoying your weekend! Beat L.A.!

Day Four - March 18th, 2011

Grrr... people were still eating leftover corned beef and cabbage today... But my time will come!

Today is the midpoint of the diet week. It's all downhill from here, which is good because honestly the first part of the diet week is my weakest part. I have more urges to slip than I do on the 2nd half.

Today, for those of you new to the blog, was banana and skim milk day. And soup of course. I ate probably a dozen bananas over the course of the day. The customary half gallon of milk was consumed as well, most of it during work tonight (got called in).

I'm enjoying some soup right now. A double bowl with some of that nice spicy miso teriyaki sauce. Not bad flavor.

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. I am going with whole canned tomatoes, regular and not Italian style. And I have a 12-oz. petite sirloin steak that's been flavoring for the past 4 days waiting for me for dinner. Mmmm.... Just what I've been waiting for.

Thanks for reading! Any feedback or advice? Leave it in the comments!

Day Three: March 17th, 2011

Not being able to eat the traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner and sip on some Irish whisky stinks!

Not a lot to report today. I ate the rest of my veggies at work today, and almost all the grapes. I didn't have any soup until I got home from class tonight, and afterwards started the next batch because I only have about a bowl and a half left of the first round.

I am thinking I need to consult with a nutritionist to find out if I should add more meat to my diet aside from the prescribed amount. I'm concerned that once I start the weights again that my body won't be getting enough protein. Of course, I could supplement that with some soy or whey protein, but I'd rather have some chicken instead; it tastes better!

I am proud to report that since I started this blog it has gained readers in 24 states in the US as well as the capitol, and in a total of 6 countries. Thank you all for reading, and I appreciate the comments you leave as well, both of advice and of encouragement. I am very blessed to have you all as friends, family, or just in my life in general.

Day Two: March 16th, 2011

Today was a bit of a down day for me... Not that I didn't adhere to the plan, but just I wasn't really all that hungry.

I ate a 1 lb bag of baby carrots at the office today, and that got me through the work day. I tried heating up my soup twice, but I didn't get around to eating it until around the time I got home. On the way home I stopped and got the tomatoes for Steak day, and the skim milk for 'nanner day, and some more veggies to eat both today and tomorrow. I also got a half head of cabbage, for Sunday, meat day #2 (gonna have corned beef and cabbage a few days late, but it will be worth it. Saint Patty's day is tomorrow, but I'm still going to have my Irish meal. Too bad no potatoes though! )

When I got home, while heating up the soup, I started the oven and put my potato in there to bake. That was just before 6. I went over to visit my best friend and see his new baby, and then came home and had the potato with some garlic butter, along with some raw broccoli, cauliflower, and baby carrots. I would have used chives again but apparently they'd been in the fridge too long and started to spoil.

No salt or pepper though, as I forgot and was nearly finished with the potato by the time I'd thought of it. How sad! In place of the chives I put a small sprinkle of a 6-cheese blend on the top, the cheese being left over from the wraps I'd been making over the last half week of the extremely extended off-time. It was ok, but next time I'll make sure to have fresh chives or some extra green onion around. After baking for 3 hours, a little longer than intended, the skin was nice and crispy!

I've drank a lot of water and tea today, and a bit of no-sugar-added apple juice as well. I'm needing more fruit juice I think to help along, because it tastes better than water, of which I already drink tons of.

That's it for today. I'm hoping tomorrow goes much better. I'm almost out of soup so I'll have to make the 2nd half of the batch tomorrow night after class!

Thanks for reading everybody! Cheers!

Day One - March 15th, 2011

Beware the Ides of March. So it says in Julius Caesar. I suppose I should have bewared it myself, starting up on the diet again.

Not sure why, but one of the apples I bought only two nights ago was smushed and moldy in the bag with the others, so this morning I had to take extra time and take all the apples out of the bag and wash them off, and then throw out the gross one. So now I have a line of apples on the kitchen counter. What a way to start off Week 3... first being up 4 lbs and then moldy diet food, right? Well, it wasn't over yet.

When I got to the office today, I had brought three of the apples, a pouch of grapes, two bowls worth of soup, and a container of mixed fruit that was left over from the last diet week, which was still fresh. Or so it looked anyways. The only things fresh in that mixture was the three grapes and the one piece of honeydew. The blackberries, blueberries, strawberry slices, and pineapple chunks were all in various stages of mushyness. The pineapple was salvageable, but nothing else really was.

I didn't eat the apples, but started on the grapes. I offered some to my dad who pointed out that there was some mold there too! Out of a 5.5 lb bag I lost about a quarter of them from mold and mush. AND from the mushy ones they were leaking juice out of the pouch, so I got some nice stain on my hoodie. When I saw that I knew that I was doing some laundry tonight :(

The rest of the day has been alright. Ate one bowl's worth of the soup at work, then ate two at home. Finished half of the grapes that were left. Had a small cup of pineapple tidbits. Watched the Blazer game.

On a note, I bought my steak for this week; 12 oz. petite sirloin, and it's seasoning already, waiting to be cooked on Saturday. I have some veggies for tomorrow, but I need more. But I am looking forward to the baked potato!

Week 3 Official Weigh-in (pre-diet week)

Previous weight: 382.2
Current weight: 386.2

+/-: +4 lbs

13 days between cycles and this is what I get. Frankly I'm sure some of that is the remainder of the steak dinner from last night, the roughly half gallon of water I drank overnight and a poor night's sleep, but that's what the scale says... It'll come off though!

March 14th, 2011 - Diet Eve Update

Well, the soup is cooling and almost ready to be put into the fridge, and I thought I'd update just a bit before I go to bed.

I'm once again making the soup in half batches, and I'm still saving up for my new stock pot. Hopefully in the next couple weeks I'll be able to buy it so I can stop ruining the seasoning of my cast iron pot I've been using.

A lot of things have changed since I started this diet. I haven't had soda once since I began over a month ago, except for in a mixed drink. I've noticed that I'm eating less portion-wise, although when I haven't eaten as regularly as I should I've been able to cram in a bit more than normal. Healthy? Perhaps not, but getting the fuel I need is.

I've been attempting to eat breakfast more often. I don't know if I'm succeeding or not but I hope that will change for the better. I'm also, with the exception of my weekend job, taking the stairs whenever possible instead of the elevator. I've noticed it's a lot easier than it was. As for my weekend job, well, you try lugging nearly 40 lbs of someone else's dinner, their bag of sauces and salads, and their two bottles of soda up sometimes three or four flights of stairs! Trust me, it's no picnic.

I'm looking forward to the nicer weather that's supposedly around the corner so I can get out on my bike more and get some nice rides in. I'm lucky to live in a fairly easy to navigate area, with lots of mini-slopes and flat spaces on which to coast a bit to catch my wind after a good climb.

Tonight I had dinner with my dad, and we went to Outback. I had some prime rib and crab cakes, kind of a celebration dinner of sorts before I go back onto my plan.

Tomorrow is the weigh-in, and day one of the diet week. I'm looking forward to it!

Oh, and for those of you, my friends, who have taken up this diet, please leave me a comment letting me know how things are going for you! I'd like to know if this program is working well for you also!

Cheers!

March 14th, 2011 - Update

Well, it's official. Tuesday will be the start date for the next week of the diet.

I have all my ingredients, and when I get home tomorrow from work and errands I will start making soup!

I need to save up so this doesn't happen again at the end of this month when rent is due... been so broke I couldn't even pay attention!

However, again, diet starts again on Tuesday, starting Tuesday morning with the official weigh in. I'll almost guarantee that I've put on a couple pounds but thems the breaks... hopefully it will be less than 4.

Thanks for your patience and constant quizzing on when I'll be starting up again. I swear I wasn't trying to skate on this; just needed food moneys.

March 10th, 2011 - Update

So, I just wanted to inform you that due to being extremely broke til Monday, I'm having to push the diet back til Tuesday.

Not exactly the result I was looking for, but I'm sure that things won't be too bad come Tuesday's weigh-in.

March 6th, 2011 - Off-diet Update

It's been a very busy last couple days, so I haven't been able to write much, unfortunately.

I have been trying to eat healthier than on the first day of my "free" time, but unfortunately I haven't succeeded much. The only saving grace is that I have been eating less as far as the portions are concerned.

In this time I have eaten a couple more cheeseburgers, a BLT, a few tacos, a couple of burritos, some fruits and seafood. The portions are down, which means calories are down as well, which is good. After 4 days of this I have gained one pound, but hope that through eating better the next few days before I start again (a delay due to the monthly rent coming due and other scheduling issues) that I will continue the trend of losing even during the off-time.

I still have a lot of energy, but with the recent illness and it's lingering after-effects combined with not sleeping very well the last few nights, I really haven't felt that rested in the mornings nor have I felt as energized when I wake up. I hope that as my immune system strengthens again and my sleep schedule returns to normal that these effects will prove to be temporary.

Again, I apologize for not being very punctual on the last few days in writing, but I promise to do better.

Cheers!

March 2nd, 2011 - Off day

I felt a lot better today.

I was so hungry this morning, after really not eating much the previous couple days, that on my way in to work I stopped at Jack in the Box for a Supreme Croissant and a Sausage Croissant. I generally don't eat breakfast, which is bad, but I was so hungry that despite eating these I was hungry again an hour later. However, one of the things this diet has taught me is that it's good to have will power.

Dad and I went to grab lunch about 12:30-ish. We went to the Brickhouse Bar & Grill down the street, and I ordered a cheeseburger with all the veggies and a side of tots. I ate about a third of the tots, so no worries there, but the burger was demolished. I'd been craving a cheeseburger since Day 2 this last week so I finally satisfied that urge.

Came home after work and relaxed for a bit, as I am still getting my energy back after being sick, then went to my class tonight. After class, my stomach was growling something fierce, but I held off eating for another hour or so before I finally went and heated up the leftover salmon and made some mashed potatoes to go with it. A glass of 100% cranberry juice to go with it and The Incredible Hulk, perfect dinner; just sayin'.

It's time for bed. I'll be making better choices eating tomorrow, although I'll be enjoying a glass of beer for sure tomorrow night! Read all about it then. Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel.

March 2nd 2011 - Official weigh-in

Previous weight: 388.9
Current weight: 382.2
+/-: -6.7 lbs

I weighed myself daily this week, and had a low at 378, but then the inactivity due to having the flu did me in, I think... Still, progress!

Day Seven - March 1st, 2011

So I've been stuck in bed pretty much all day. It hasn't been a great day.

I finished the last bowl of my soup earlier, adding the cut up pieces of the last drumstick from yesterday to make a chicken veggie soup at my dad's bequest. With a bit of hot sauce to spice it up (and hopefully burn out the bug) it wasn't bad.

I have rice to cook and eat still, with hot sauce and two varieties of teriyaki to sample with it, but I think I will wait til my roommate brings me some veggies to pair with the rice.

I have also drank a half gallon of unsweetened fruit juice, loaded with vitamin C. I hope it helps me feel better.

My roommate finally got home with a couple heads of broccoli and some baby carrots, so I steamed up the broccoli, cooked up rice and then flavored with some spicy miso teriyaki. Mmm... really good.

Well, looking forward to the weigh-in tomorrow, to see where I'm at after another week of dieting. Real food! I'm so having a cheeseburger on these off-days!
